Study Suggests BMI Target for Ventral Hernia Repair

To reduce the risk for complications in obese patients undergoing open ventral incisional hernia repairs and lessen some of the physical challenges of operating on this patient population, preoperative weight loss is often encouraged. To date, it has been unclear exactly how much weight is “excessive” in this setting, but new research suggests there is a definitive tip toward more problems in patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 45 kg/m2.
